I used to never have an appreciation for tonewoods because every guitar I have played in my early days was spruce top and layered mahogany back and sides. So I grew up my entire life with only one sound that I knew of. It wasn’t until late in life (post-Covid 19) that I had the chance to play different tonewood guitars. Although I trained myself to only like loud and bright guitars, playing other woods have been enlightening.
The folks over at Guitarist Next Door https://guitaristnextdoor.com/ put together this nice plot of how sounds affect the 4 pillars of sound.
I would suggest that if you had the chance, go play different tonewoods in guitars. I will say that I am now a huge fan of Koa, Cedar, and Walnut. What’s your favorite tonewoods?
